CANADA
The first Europeans arriving in North America, based on evidence were Norse, travelling over from Greenland, where
Erik the Red, started a settlement about 985 AD. In 1001 his son Leif is said to have explored the north east coast today
called Canada. Canada’s first people used at least 53 different languages. Each group referred to themselves by a
specific name in their own language
The French occupied Québec in 1608 and the British occupied what are now themaritime provinces around the same time
